Do you feel like your body is in a constant state of alertness? Minor noises irritate you, you find it hard to focus on conversations in bustling places, and a sense of unease accompanies you even when you are theoretically safe? These are signals that your autonomic nervous system may need regulation. Discover the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) – an innovative auditory therapy available at the Introspection Space in Piaseczno.
Modern psychotherapy is no longer just about conversation. It also involves direct work with physiology. The SSP protocol is a tool that allows you to reach the nervous system "through the back door" – via the sense of hearing – to restore its balance and ability to regenerate.
Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a non-invasive therapeutic intervention developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, the creator of the famous Polyvagal Theory. It is an auditory program designed with one goal: to regulate the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) and help patients emerge from a state of chronic threat (fight, flight, or freeze).
The program consists of three modules, (Connect, Core, Balance), each containing 5 hours of specially processed music. Importantly – this is not ordinary relaxation music. The pieces in SSP have been digitally filtered to highlight frequencies corresponding to the human voice, (the mid-frequency range). It is these sounds that our brain evolutionarily associates with safety and calm.
SSP operates on a "bottom-up" principle. You don’t need to analyze your fears or recount trauma. Change occurs at a physiological level.Based on the Polyvagal Theory, the process works as follows:
Middle ear training:
The filtered music stimulates and "trains" tiny muscles in the middle ear. For many people with trauma or chronic stress, these muscles are "lazy," allowing too many low sounds (associated with danger, e.g., the hum of machinery, street noise) to reach the brain.Signal to the Vagus Nerve:
Activating the ear sends a signal to the vagus nerve, the main "highway" of our nervous system.Change of state (Neuroception):
The nervous system receives a powerful message: "You are safe." This allows defensive mechanisms to shut down and transition into a state of social engagement. As a result, the body stops wasting energy on constant threat scanning and begins to regenerate, digest, and open up to relationships.
Key benefits of SSP: Who is this therapy for?
anxiety, trauma (PTSD), hyperactivity (ADHD), and autism spectrum (ASD).Benefits for Children and Adolescents:
Emotion regulation:
Less explosive anger, greater mood stability, and decreased irritability.School and focus:
Reduction of auditory hypersensitivity (e.g., a child stops covering their ears in a loud classroom), leading to better concentration and academic performance.Relationships:
Easier connection with peers and parents, better understanding of human speech amidst noise.Benefits for Adults:
Reduction of generalized and social anxiety symptoms and tension resulting from trauma.Quality of life:
Better sleep quality, higher tolerance to stimuli (light, sound), and reduction of "brain fog."Connections:
Greater openness to intimacy in relationships and easier reading of others' intentions (thanks to improved so-called neuroception). Why is it worth incorporating SSP into your therapeutic process?
Introspection Space in Piaseczno, we treat SSP as a powerful support for other forms of therapy. Why? Because a regulated nervous system is the foundation for change.Increases the effectiveness of psychotherapy:
When your nervous system feels safe, it is easier for you to work on emotions in the office (e.g., during CBT or EFT sessions).Enables deeper change:
SSP reduces physiological resistance to change. It’s like preparing the soil before planting seeds. What does SSP therapy look like in our Center?
under the supervision of a certified therapist. In the Introspection Space, we offer a flexible cooperation model: Qualifying consultation:
